App Store Submission and Distribution Components

All required information shall be uploaded using the Publisher Dashboard Request App form. If you do not have your login credentials, please contact your Digital Specialist.
Required Information

Display Name

The on-device display name is the name that appears on the device’s home screen and is used for on-device search for the app. It is not used for store searches.

• Maximum length is 12 characters• Display name does not need to match the store name. For example, you could use an abbreviated display name, such as “PG” and a full-length store name.

Store Name

This is the name that users will see in the store. App names are also included as search terms for app discoverability in the store.


  • Suggested character count is 30, however more is supported in iOS and Android
  • Does not need to match the app’s device display name
  • Must not be trademarked by another entity – if it is, the submission may be rejected
  • Must be available, that is not already in use by another app

GTxcel will notify you when if the name is not available at the time of submission. To avoid delays due to this problem, please search each app store for the app name to confirm.

Start Issue

This will be the first issue in your app.


This is a description that appears in the app stores to help users determine whether or not they would like to download the app. It is a key piece of marketing text for your app!

Note that the description is reviewed by Apple & Amazon during the approval process, to make sure that all functional claims are delivered in the app. Please be sure that you do NOT mention another competitor device or platform in your description. (For example, do not state that your app is also available on ANDROID in your APPLE description)


  • Maximum length: 1060 characters
  • No html tags, special characters or formatting
  • Line breaks will be preserved

Recommended content to include:

  • Introductory short enticement
  • A short description of your publication’s content
  • Information about the included news feed(s)
  • A list of functional features, per the example below (which may be used verbatim)
  • The first available issue date
  • If applicable, information about a free/sample issue(s)
  • If in-app purchase access model is chosen, GTxcel will include a short paragraph about the Apple’s autorenew policy and pricing. While the autorenew policy is not required to be stated in the store descriptions for Amazon and Google Play they both do autorenew their subscriptions.

Apple Primary Category and Secondary Category

Primary category is where the app will be listed for users browsing the App Store by category. Secondary category will be used for search. For example, if your application is listed with a Primary Category of Finance and a Secondary category of Business, users will see your application listed when they browse the Finance category and will also get your application as one of the search results if they search for “business.”

  • Select one primary category that best describes your application/publication
  • Select one secondary category that will provide an additional search term which may help users find your app.
  • Choose both primary and secondary categories from the following list:

Keywords are matched to customers’ searches in the app stores and help return accurate search results. Your application will only be searchable by application name, company name and your entered keywords so choose your keywords wisely.

  • Keywords must be no longer than 100 characters, include special characters and spaces
  • Keyword terms must be related to your application content
  • Apple may reject a submission if the keywords contain:
    • references to other applications or trademarked terms
    • offensive terms
  • Keywords can be single words or phrases

Apple iTunes Content Rating

Apple will apply a rating to all apps, based on a short questionnaire.

Please provide the rating choice for each of the following, for your publication and feed content:

  • Cartoon or fantasy violence
  • Realistic violence
  • Sexual content or nudity
  • Profanity or crude humor
  • Alcohol, tobacco, or drug use or references (or ads)
  • Mature/suggestive themes
  • Simulated gambling
  • Horror/fear themes
  • Prolonged graphic or sadistic realistic violence
  • Graphic sexual content or nudity

The rating choices for each are:

  • none
  • infrequent/mild
  • frequent/intense

Please consider both the editorial and ad content. For example, if your magazine sometimes includes ads for beer, that means there is mild/infrequent alcohol/tobacco/drug content. This will translate to a rating note in the App Store and warning when a user first launches the app, but will not prevent users from accessing the app.

Google Play Content Rating

Choose the rating that will accompany your app in the Google Play store.

  • Everyone
  • Low Maturity
  • Medium Maturity
  • High Maturity

Below are the details for each category as defined by Google:

Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs

Apps that contain illegal content are not permitted in Android Market. Apps that include references to drugs, alcohol or tobacco products must be rated “Medium maturity” or above. Apps that primarily focus on the consumption or sale of drugs, alcohol or tobacco must be rated “High maturity.”


Apps that facilitate real gambling are not permitted in Android Market. Apps with gambling themes or simulated gambling must be rated “Medium maturity” or “High maturity.”


Hate speech is not allowed in Android Market. Apps that contain inflammatory content must be rated “Medium maturity” or “High maturity.”


Applications rated “Everyone” must not ask users for their location. Apps that access location data must be rated “Low maturity” or above. Apps that publish or share users’ location with others must be rated “Medium maturity” or “High maturity.”

Profanity and Crude Humor

Apps that include profanity or crude humor should be rated “Medium maturity” or “High maturity.”

Sexual and Suggestive Content

Pornography is not permitted in Android Market. Apps that include suggestive or sexual references must be rated “Medium maturity” or “High maturity.” Apps that focus on suggestive or sexual references must be rated “High maturity.”

User Generated Content and User to User Communication

Apps rated “Everyone” must not host any user generated content or enable communication between users. Apps that focus on allowing users to find each other and communicate should be rated “Medium maturity” or “High maturity.”


Apps that contain mild cartoon or fantasy violence must be rated “Low maturity” or above. Apps that contain realistic or intense fantasy violence must be rated “Medium maturity” or “High maturity,” and those that contain graphic violence must be rated “High maturity.” Gratuitous real violence is not allowed in Android Market.

Mis-rated Apps

Please note that users can notify us if they believe an app is incorrectly rated. If we agree that the flagged app is incorrectly rated, we will re-rate it per our guidelines. Repeat offenders may be subject to further action, up to and including account termination.


iTunes, Google Play & Amazon require that your app is submitted with a handful of screenshots. The intent of these screenshots is to display the look & feel of the interface of the app. Screenshots will be taken and submitted to the applicable store(s) at GTxcel’s discretion. The screenshots may include views of:

  • The library view
  • The Contents/Navigator view
  • RSS Feeds view
  • Magazine Cover page
  • Article text view

For Apple:  Changing screenshots after the app has been submitted will require GTxcel to submit a new version of your app to the iTunes Store. Applicable resubmission fees will apply.

For Google & Amazon: If the app was submitted under your company’s developer accounts, these screenshots can be changed by you, at your leisure and will not be subject to resubmission fees.  If you elect to have GTxcel replace the screenshots, applicable resubmission fees will apply.
